Library News

FEMA has assembled a great deal of information to help individuals and families prepare for disasters. Visit ready.gov at: http://www.ready.gov/. For example, the site has a section called "Be Informed", which covers natural disasters, pandemics, hazards, terrorist hazards, and protecting and recovering from disasters. The site also teaches you how to make a plan on aiding family members, shutting off utilities, taking care of your pets, etc. The website also informs you how to make a disaster preparedness kit. Please check out this website so you and your family will be prepared incase a disaster strikes your area.

Marcia Webb Pepperman recently visited the library to share her book, "Grace Was In Their Steps." The book is about her late grandfather, Dr. Alfred Pellar Webb, who lived in Atmore in the early 1900's.

The Atmore Public Library was awarded an LSTA grant for the Hippy Program (Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youngsters).  The goal of the Hippy Program is to work with parents and preschool age children in the home so they will be prepared for kindergarten.  The staff at the library is privileged to work with the Hippy program and we hope it is a huge success.  For more information on the Hippy Program please contact Hippy Coordinator Diane Rose at 368-5478.

The Atmore Public Library received a grant from the Poarch Creek Indians.  We are very appreciative of all they do to help us.  With the funds that we received, we were able to have several programs for the senior citizens, purchase large print books and shelving for the large print books.  Please come in and take a look at the new shelving and books that we have purchased.

KEEP IN TOUCH!

The Library now offers soldiers and their families a way to keep in touch--face-to-face!  Thanks to Gov. Bob Riley and APLS, we now have an iMac computer that has a built-in webcam for communicating with loved ones whether it is overseas or in the United States.  106 libraries in the state of Alabama were chosen, and we are very happy to have received the iMac.  This is a free service and we hope that families in the community will come and use it. If you have any questions please contact the library at 251-368-5234.
