The Atmore Public Library was awarded an LSTA grant for the Hippy Program (Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youngsters). The goal of the Hippy Program is to work with parents and preschool age children in the home so they will be prepared for kindergarten. The staff at the library is privileged to work with the Hippy program and we hope it is a huge success. The Big Read - http://www.neabigread.org/about.php
The Big Read provides citizens with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within their communities. The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. The initiative includes innovative reading programs in selected cities and towns, comprehensive resources for discussing classic literature, an ambitious national publicity campaign, and an extensive Web site providing comprehensive information on authors and their works.
The Atmore Public Library received a grant from the Poarch Creek Indians. We are very appreciative of all they do to help us. With the funds that we received we were able to have several programs for the senior citizens, purchase large print books and shelving for the large print books. Please come in and take a look at the new shelving and books that we've purchased.

KEEP IN TOUCH!
The Library now offers soldiers and their families a way to keep in touch--face-to-face! Thanks to Gov. Bob Riley and
APLS, we now have an iMac computer that has a built-in webcam for communicating with loved ones whether it is
overseas or in the United States. 106 libraries in the state of Alabama were chosen, and we are very happy to have
received the iMac. This is a free service and we hope that families in the community will come and use it. If you have
any questions please contact the library at 251-368-5234.

Atmore Public Library Receives Grant
The Atmore Public Library was recently awarded a $7,760 LSTA (Library Services Technology Act.)
Collection Development Grant through Alabama Public Library Service. The Friends of the Library will
provide $2,000 for the local match.
The Library is adding and updating books, videos and audio materials in the children's department.
This has been an ongoing project with donations from the Poarch Creek Indians, Representative Alan
Baker's Community Service Grant and Youth Leadership Atmore. By the end of the grant cycle the children's
department should have the most current reference material and the latest fiction for the children to
gain knowledge from and enjoy. This is one of the many projects the Friends of the Library Board contribute to,
thanks to your generous donations to their annual drive.
